Officer Who Was Shot Identified by RPD, Suspect Charged

Rochester Police have identified the officer who is recovering after being shot earlier this week as Bryan Sheridan, a 14-year veteran of the department. And they say four-time convicted violent felon James Hunter has been charged with multiple felonies for breaking into a building on Hague Street and firing at the officer when he arrived on the scene.

The RPD says Officer Sheridan and Officer Daniel Watson were fired on as they approached the house Sheridan was seen attempting to break into. Police say Sheridan fired from the enclosed porch and struck Officer Sheridan in the neck, as well as the area of his gun belt. Both officers returned fire, and Hunter ran away, jumping fences and cutting through back yards until breaking his leg while trying to get over a fence. A K-9 dog caught up with him and he was taken into custody.

Hunter is now charged with Attempted Aggravated Murder for shooting at the officer, Burglary and Criminal Possession of a Weapon as well as other crimes.
