No Delay for State Minimum Wage Hike

The state labor department has decided not to postpone the minimum wage increase that is scheduled to take effect at the end of the month.

The minimum wage outside New York City and its suburbs is set to rise to $12.50 an hour.

Some state lawmakers argued the increase should be suspended because it will further harm small businesses already hurt this year by the effects of COVID- related shutdowns.

The department concluded that the state was able to achieve record-low unemployment in recent years, even with several minimum wage increases.
