State lawmakers could be brought back into session within the next two weeks to approve an income tax increase retroactive to the start of this year.
State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie is not discussing the specifics of the increase but says it could compensate for the drop in revenue from the economic slowdown caused by the pandemic.
Governor Cuomo opposes the idea of a tax increase before he proposes a budget for the next fiscal year. He wants to hold off until the state finds out if it will be getting aid from the federal government.
And Republican lawmakers argue a tax increase will only drive more people to move out of the state.
