Election 2020: State Senate Dem Supermajority Not Likely

UPDATE: It appears Democrats are going to have to wait just a bit longer for a possible supermajority in the New York State Senate.

Right now, Republicans are on track to pick up four seats.

Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins sent out a statement yesterday saying Election Day was a tough one for Democrats.

The party was hoping to end up with enough seats to give them the power to override any vetoes from Governor Cuomo.

11/3/20: Democrats in the New York State Senate could end up winning an important political prize today.

What Democrats want is to take control of two more seats in the State Senate...which would give them a supermajority. They want that for two reasons: they'd be able to override any veto from Governor Cuomo....and more importantly, they'd be able to dictate how the legislative redistricting process goes after the 2020 census....potentially making it friendlier for Democratic candidates.

The two of the seats they're hoping for are the 55th and 56th districts in Rochester...where Republicans Rich Funke and Joe Robach are retiring.

Democrat Samra Brouk and Republican Chris Missick (R) are competing to replace Funke. Missick tells 13WHAM he feels good about how he ran his campaign. Brouk says she would give the district more of a voice in Albany if she wins:

Now in the 56th District it's Democrat Jeremy Cooney and Republican Mike Barry going head to head. Barry is a Greece Republican who says we need to make sure that upstate New York receives its fair share in the upcoming budget. Cooney is a Rochester Democrat who lists improving education as his top goal.
