Police Again Fire Pepper Balls at Demonstrators

Rochester Police fired pepper balls at demonstrators overnight, saying they were being pelted with eggs, rocks and bottles by the crowd.

This happened at Wilder and Child Streets, after the Black Lives Matter demonstrators marched from Jefferson Avenue through the city. Police blocked off the bridge that carries Child Street over I-490 to the Child Street police station on the other side.

Police say the crowd tried to push past community elders who were standing between them and police to keep the protest peaceful. They say they gave numerous warnings, then fired pepper balls about 11:00 p.m. Police say the crowd remained in place past 1:30 in the morning, with some people throwing additional bottles and rocks before dispersing.

There were three arrests: 50-year-old Nicholas Wilt was charged with unlawful assembly and resisting arrest. Richard Yaniak of Rochester was charged with unlawful assembly and inciting a riot, and Ashley Moore of Rochester was arrested for harassment.
