Cuomo Wants More Accountability for Utilities

Governor Cuomo wants to hold New York state utilities more responsible for storm power outages and he is proposing legislation to hold them accountable.

Cuomo wants to increase penalty amounts, streamline the process to shut down utilities that repeatedly fail to perform, and mandate better communication with customers.

He believes the laws are too protective of utilities, adding that if utilities can't perform adequately, they need to be replaced with providers who can.

Current laws cap penalties at $100,000, and Cuomo says that's not stiff enough -- especially since some utilities have a "too big to fail" mentality.
