New York State Police and local law enforcement agencies will be launching a statewide crackdown on speeding over the next week. Governor Andrew Cuomo's office says unsafe speeds were a factor in a third of all fatal crashes the first half of this year, compared with 30 percent last year.
The state says it will be a high-visibility campaign of increased police patrols on state and local highways. It's coordinated with a statewide "no excuses" advertising campaign.
