Governor Cuomo's office is clarifying seemingly conflicting statements from the state about testing for the coronavirus at schools.
The state education department's guidelines recommend against mandatory tests of students and staff, but Cuomo seemed to indicate on Monday that testing requirements would be part of the reopening plans.
In a statement Tuesday, his office said districts must have plans for testing symptomatic or exposed people, either in school or through the local health department. Districts could establish broader testing, if they choose.
Cuomo is expected to say this week whether schools can open next month for in-person classes.
