Two of the region's big utilities -- RG&E and NYSEG -- are canceling plans for two natural gas pipelines and setting a goal of zero growth in natural gas sales over the next three years.
They say instead they will promote energy efficiency and offer incentives to customers to replace gas furnaces with efficient heat pumps.
The plan came after pressure from environmental groups and is in line with the state's goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
It still requires the approval of state regulators, but could take effect later this year.
