Douglass Statue Vandalized

The statue in Maplewood Park was found removed from its base and left leaning against a fence about 50 feet away, near the Genesee River Gorge.

There was damage to the bottom of the statue, the base, and a finger on the statue's hand.

It's not clear if the vandalism was in any way connected to the anniversary of Douglass' famed Rochester speech on July 5, 1852.

Two area college students pleaded guilty to criminal mischief for vandalizing a Douglass statue in 2018.
