Brighton Central Replacing Sports Team Mascot

The Brighton Central School District will choose a new mascot for its sports teams...saying the current "Baron" is a symbol of elitism and privilege at best, and can be historically traced to slavery.

A letter to parents from Superintendent Kevin McGowan says the district also intends to incorporate anti-bias practices in its hiring, address how the district works with all members of the comunity and require training on implicit bias for all staff.

McGowan says the district has placed a sign at the Twelve Corners reading “Brighton Believes that Black Lives Matter … Join Us.” He says that means it's not enough to talk about integrity and respect, he says the district also has to act it.
