Phelps Woman Takes Plea Deal, Stole $750K From Employer

A Phelps woman accused of stealing more than 750 thousand dollars from her employer, is taking a plea deal. U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. says Karen Owens pleaded guilty to wire fraud today. Federal prosecutors say Owens was employed by Finger Lakes Conveyors, Inc. as the Director of Finance and between 2011 and 2017, she wrote and issued nearly 400 checks payable to herself from her employer’s bank account. Federal prosecutors also say Owens used the company account to make payments on a personal credit card. In order to cover her tracks, authorities say Owens falsely recorded the checks as payment for legitimate business expenses. She faces a maximum of 20 years in prison when she is sentenced in September.
