Warren Backs Legislature's Police Reform Bill

The Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus in the State Legislature has introduced a package of police reform legislation in a statewide Zoom news conference and rally -- designed to demonstrate statewide support for the bills.

In Rochester, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren spoke in favor of one bill that abolishes a law known as "50-a." It has been used by police departments to justify not releasing officers' disciplinary records to the courts or the public.

The package of bills expands the requirement for the use of body-worn cameras by police. It makes strangulation of a person a crime, referencing the death of George Floyd, and it reduces the use of arrest by police in cases involving non-criminal conduct.
