Medical Condition Hits 4 Inmates at County Jail, Deputy Injured

The Monroe County Jail was placed on lockdown Wednesday for a Code Blue, after four inmates were found to be experiencing unknown medical conditions.

The Sheriff’s office says deputies were called to the 3rd floor of the jail for two inmates who were incoherent and lethargic. As deputies responded, another two inmates on the same floor were found to be experiencing similar symptoms. While running to help, one deputy fell and sustained a head injury, becoming unconscious.

All four inmates and the deputy were taken to the hospital. Authorities say all inmates on the 3rd floor are being medically evaluated.

At this time authorities believe a substance may have come into the jail through a piece of mail, causing the inmates’ reactions. An investigation is underway and the jail is being searched by K-9s.
