Rochester Man Convicted Of Attempted Murder, Assault

A Rochester man has been convicted of attempted murder, assault and a gun crime for the shooting of a 17-year-old pregnant woman on the city's west side.

Thirty-year-old Samuel Smith tried to kill the young woman in May 2013.

Authorities say he intended to kill her to avenge the death of another woman who had been murdered less than a week before.

Evidence showed that he followed the victim on Danforth Street before smiling at her and shooting her.

The victim and her unborn child survived the shooting, and Smith was arrested a few days later. His first trial resulted in a conviction, but it was overturned on appeal.

Smith will be sentenced in April.
