Rochester Man Convicted 2nd Time in Attempted Murder Case

A Monroe County Jury has convicted a Rochester man of attempted murder, assault and criminal use of a firearm for the shooting of a 17-year-old pregnant woman on Danforth Street nearly seven years ago.

Thirty-year-old Samuel Smith tried to kill the young woman in May of 2013. Authorities say he intended to kill her to avenge the death of another woman who had been murdered less than a week before. Evidence showed that he followed the victim before smiling at her and shooting her.

The victim and her unborn child survived the shooting, and Smith was arrested a few days later. His first trial resulted in a conviction, but it was overturned last summer by the Court of Appeals. The second jury trial also came to the same guilty verdict.

Smith will be sentenced in April.
