RCSD Mid-Year Budget Cuts, Layoffs Approved

The Rochester school board has approved the mid-year budget cuts to help close the budget deficit.

The vote was 5 to 2, with board President Van White and Commissioner Natalie Sheppard voting no.

The cuts include the layoffs of 109 teachers.

Another 46 teachers who had been targeted for layoffs are being spared because the district will be able to pay them with unspent federal grant money.

The vote came after a dozens of people spoke at a four-hour meeting.
