The Wayne County Department of Motor Vehicles says a box of confidential documents was inadvertently thrown away by a cleaning crew last week, possibly exposing the confidential information of 239 people.
A statement from Wayne County Clerk Michael Jankowski said the box of sales tax applications was supposed to be sent to Albany, but was mistaken for trash despite being in a locked area of the clerk's office. All the people whose applications were put at risk will be notified by mail.
The incident has been referred to the State Department of Motor Vehicles for investigation.
