Phelps Man Rescued From Wrecked Car

A missing Phelps man was located in his wrecked car late yesterday afternoon...after a homeowner noticed his mailbox had been flattened.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office had been looking for 87-year-old Harold Smith since he left a restaurant in Phelps and didn't return home. The owner of the mailbox investigated and found Smith's car had left Route 96, hit his mailbox, then dropped about eight feet into a shallow creek.

The Phelps Fire Department quickly rescued Smith from his car and he was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He had no serious injuries from the crash, but was suffering from exposure due to being partly immersed in water.
