Rochester police and the community are in mourning for Officer Manny Ortiz, who crashed his car and died Saturday evening on his way to work.
His car swerved off Empire Boulevard and crashed into a ravine.
Law enforcement sources tell Bob Lonsberry Ortiz was struck by an accidental firearm discharge, leading to his death and the crash.
Civilians and deputies tried to administer first aid, but Ortiz died at the scene.
He was a 22-year police veteran.
