Rochester Police Officer Killed in Accident on Way to Work

A Rochester Police Officer was killed in an accident Saturday night on his drive into work. Manuel "Manny" Ortiz, 52, was killed when his car crashed into a ravine in Penfield. According to sources, Ortiz was struck by an accidental firearm discharge. Ortiz was reportedly driving for help when he lost consciousness. Good Samaritans who saw the crash administered first aid to Ortiz. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies arrived and applied a tourniquet, but it was too late. Ortiz was pronounced dead on the scene. Oritz was a 22-year veteran of the force. Rochester Police Chief La'Ron Singletary said many people in the community knew Ortiz. "Manny was a great officer," said Singletary. "When you lose a brother officer, it's heartbreaking."
