Governor Cuomo says he would support legislation putting the Rochester city schools under the control of the mayor.
Meantime, he says the City of Rochester already has the authority to manage the fix the financial problems in the city school district.
Cuomo says the city council approves the school district budget, and says the city should be able to put conditions on that approval.
Mayor Lovely Warren says in a statement she appreciates the governor's comments.....but adds that the courts have held that education governance lies solely with the State of New York.
The school district exceeded its last budget by $30 million. The school board will meet next week to consider ideas to reduce the deficit spending.
She says quote "I believe it is time to put our words into action and stand ready to partner with that the state, parents and teachers to deliver meaningful change for our children."
