Stocks soared Wednesday (November 4) after Democrats captured control of both the House and Senate in the U.S. midterm elections, delivering a clear outcome that eased political uncertainty for investors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 1,000 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also posted strong gains throughout the day.

According to CNBC, investors responded positively after President Donald Trump accepted the election results and signaled a willingness to work with Democrats. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC that "the rebound was in part due to the president’s initial tone and reaction to the results," adding that gridlock in government has historically been good for markets.

The rally followed a period of choppy trading ahead of the vote, as Wall Street weighed the potential impact of shifting political power. As noted by Quartz, history shows the S&P 500 has finished higher in the 12 months after every U.S. midterm election since 1950, with an average gain of about 15%. The removal of political and policy uncertainty is cited as a key reason for these post-midterm rallies.

On Wednesday, shares tied to consumer staples, healthcare, and renewables led gains. CNBC reported that Walmart rose 3% and Bank of America gained 2.5%, while renewable energy stocks such as First Solar and Plug Power jumped as much as 10%. Health insurers and hospital operators, including Molina Healthcare and HCA Healthcare, also advanced.

However, the shift in congressional power raised concerns about the future of AI infrastructure and data center expansion. As NBC News explained, several newly elected Democratic governors have called for moratoriums on data center construction in states like Texas, Georgia, and Ohio. Shares of companies with major data center investments, including CoreWeave, SpaceX, and Tesla, fell sharply in early trading.

Morgan Stanley strategists told NBC News that "key market implications include incrementally negative AI sentiment on greater expectations for data center restrictions." Evercore’s Sarah Bianchi added that "2027 is shaping up to be a turbulent year as developers will be forced to adapt to a shifting policy landscape," although the full impact will depend on specific local policies.

The election’s outcome also affected global markets and commodities. Oil prices dropped more than 3%, while gold and silver rallied as investors adjusted to the new political landscape, according to CNBC.

Looking ahead, experts cited by both Quartz and NBC News caution that while historical trends are strong, past performance does not guarantee future returns. Uncertainty remains, especially regarding regulation of the fast-growing AI sector and the potential for policy changes under a divided government.
