Legislators Fight New State License Plates; $25 Fee

State Senator Robert Ortt and Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb are pushing their legislation to ban the $25 fee for new license plates. New Yorkers are being ordered to get the plates if their current ones are more than ten years old.

Senator Ortt calls it a new state tax and wants to outlaw the fee. He says you should pay for new plates only if yours are damaged or lost, not because the state has a whim. But Governor Cuomo's office says the fee was authorized by the state legislature back in 2009, before Governor Cuomo took office in 2011.

Republicans are launching a social media campaign against the license plate fee.
