New York's so-called Red Flag gun law is now in effect.
The law was signed by Governor Cuomo in February and prevents people who show signs of being a threat from buying or possessing a firearm.
It empowers teachers, law enforcement and family members to pursue court intervention when they believe someone is a danger to themselves or others.
The law took effect Saturday.
Governor Cuomo calls it -- in his words -- "a big step forward for common sense gun safety."
