Grease Trap Security Sweeps Completed

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo says county inspectors have completed their sweeps at nearly 2,500 local restaurants to assess the security of grease trap covers.

More than 530 establishments were found to have outside grease traps on the premises. Four deficiencies were found and remediated.

Dinolfo ordered the sweeps after a small boy fell into a grease trap and died last month behind a Rochester donut shop.

There has been no clear standard at the state or local level for regular inspections of grease trap covers, but Dinolfo has proposed county safety standards and annual inspections. The County Legislature will hold a public hearing on the proposals September 10.
