The parent company of the Democrat & Chronicle and the parent company of some other area newspapers -- the Rochester Business Journal, the Daily Record and the Daily Messenger have come to a deal on a merger.
Gannett is reportedly merging with Perinton-based GateHouse Media which is backed by investment firm Newmedia.
The merger would create the nation's largest newspaper company. It would keep the Gannett name and would be based at Gannett's headquarters in Virginia.
In a statement the companies say the merger will accelerate the combined company's digital transformation.
