The Ontario County Health Department is warning that conditions are now right for blue green algae blooms on area lakes.
It's safe to swim and boat in areas of the lakes without visible algae, but if you see discolored water and a paint-like scum on top in shallow areas, stay away.
Some blue green algaes produce toxins that can irritate the throat, eyes, nose and skin. Washing with soap and water is the remedy if you get exposed.
