Official Green Light Given on Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

Governor Cuomo has signed a new law allowing illegal immigrants to get New York state driver's licenses.

The bill was approved yesterday by the state Senate 33 to 29. All the yes votes came from Democrats, while seven Democrats joined the Republicans who voted no.

The new law will take effect in six months.

Cuomo had expressed concerns that federal immigration agents could use the DMV database to find people in the country illegally, but State Attorney General Letitia James says the bill includes protections for those people.
