State Leaders Work Out Details of Bills Protecting Rights of Tenants

The leaders of the state Senate and Assembly have worked out the details of legislation protecting and expanding the rights of tenants.

The package would allow cities and towns statewide to adopt rent control regulations similar to those that have been in effect for decades in New York City.

Democrats in control of the legislature say the bills will keep rent affordable.

Opponents say the changes could put small landlords out of business because they would be unable to raise rents to cover rising costs. And they say rent control will cause apartments to fall into disrepair.

The bills are expected to pass this week, and the governor has said he will sign them.
