Iraq War Veteran David Bellavia to Receive the Medal of Honor

Iraq War Veteran and Batavia resident David Bellavia has been named to receive the Medal of Honor.

He will become the first living Iraq War veteran to be presented with the honor.

Bellavia was previously presented with the Silver Star, and other decorations, or his actions during the Second Battle of Fallujah.

His actions occured during his platoon's house- to-house search for insurgents. Bellavia killed one who was preparing to load a rocket-propelled grenade. He shot and killed two more who fired at him, then killed a fourth in hand-to-hand to combat in a room full of explosives.

Since leaving the service, Bellavia has been a candidate for Congress and has hosted a radio talk show. He was a co-founder of Vets for Freedom.

He grew up in Orleans County.
