UR Suspends Fraternity Chapter After Hazing Allegation Raised

The University of Rochester has suspended one of its fraternities amid a hazing allegation.

The university says in a statement that charges were brought against the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity this spring. It says the fraternity did not dispute the charges, and entered into what the university calls a "Reasonable Option" agreement. That agreement provided for immediate suspension of the Sigma Alpha Mu chapter and revokes its membership rights until June of 2022.

The university says it appears nobody was hurt during the alleged hazing.

The Reasonable Option is a provision that lets the fraternity admit to violating the university's code of conduct without going through formal hearings.
