RIT Student Charged in Cryptocurrency Scheme

An RIT student is one of six people being charged as part of a hacking group suspected of stealing more than $2.4 million.

Reyad Gafar Abbas is a computer engineering student at RIT and is currently on leave. Federal prosecutors say he and five others were part of a hacking group known as “The Community.”

They hacked cell phones and stole identifies to get access to their cryptocurrency. Three people who prosecutors say worked for a mobile phone service are accused of supplying the identities.
