Senator Chuck Schumer is calling on the federal government to declare an emergency as the number of cases of a drug-resistant superbug continue to rise.
Officials say Candida Auris is a fungus that is resistant to multiple drugs, creating a problem for many healthcare facilities in New York and across the nation. There are 319 confirmed cases in New York and 106 in New Jersey.
Schumer says declaring the emergency will free up federal money to better treat and diagnose those infected with the tough-to-kill fungus that's also been reported in Illinois, California, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma.
