A deadly fire in Batavia is under investigation. Firefighters arrived at a home on Evans Street just after 7 a.m. The house is located just down the street from the firehouse. According to Chief Stefano Napolitano there was heavy smoke and flames when firefighters arrived. They pulled a man from the second-story of a single-family home. The man died at United Memorial Medical Center. Several other people in the residence managed to escape. A cat, a chicken, and two dogs made it out, but another dog died. The identity of the victim has not yet been released. The fire is being investigated by the City of Batavia's Fire Investigation team along with investigators from the City of Batavia Police Department and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. The Salvation Army is helping the residents displaced by the fire.
