RPD Reverses Policy, Will Accept "Minority" Application

The Rochester Police Department has reversed itself and will accept an application from a man who applied to become an officer as a minority candidate. Peter Abee was adopted as a child in Bulgaria.

Based on an AncestryDNA test, he applied for a police job as an Asian-Pacific Islander. He was told that the test results were not acceptable evidence of his ethnicity.

The RPD required the birth certificates for the parents Abee never knew.

But News10NBC uncovered a Bulgarian adoption document identifying Abee as a minority, and the RPD is accepting it -- and revising its policy.
