Fire Spreads Through Rochester Apartment Building

Rochester, NY -- A civilian and a firefighter have been injured from a five-alarm fire at 440 Thurston Road in the 19th Ward.

The fire broke out Monday morning in a three-story apartment building called the Flanders building, built in 1925.

The fire put a plume of dark smoke over the city's southeast side that was visible for miles.

Firefighters were pulled out of the building and fought the fire from outside. Every truck in the city fire department was at the scene, and suburban departments were standing by to cover any other calls in the city.

The building was reported this spring to have been put up for sale by the same company that owns the nearby building where tenants have been protesting code violations.
