The New York State Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the death of a former Rochester woman who was being held at the Erie County Holding Center.
India Cummings died in 2016, after her arrest for a car theft and police chase in Lackawanna. She had a broken arm at the time of her arrest but wasn't taken to a hospital until she went into cardiac arrest 17 days later.
The state Correction Commission found she was in a state of psychosis behind bars and received no treatment. The commission ruled her death a "homicide by medical neglect." The Erie County D-A asked the A.G. this summer to investigate, citing a possible conflict of interest in his own office.
