UPDATE: Man Charged Following Hamlin Domestic Incident

A Brockport man is facing charges for the disturbance that ended in gunplay last night at his estranged wife's home in Hamlin.

Matthew Denning is accused of violating a protective order when he showed up at the woman's home on Redman Road, forced his way inside and shoved the woman.

Chief Deputy Michael Fowler says Denning then threatened off-duty jail Deputy James Atkins, who was at the home at the time, with scissors he grabbed off a counter.

Authorities say they believe Denning and his wife had become estranged around January, and Atkins had been socially seeing her since June.

Atkins fire one round that missed Denning, but Denning suffered head injuries in the struggle. The woman was bruised.

Denning is charged aggravated contempt, burglary, menacing and assault. Atkins has been assigned to administrative duty while the sheriff's office conducts an internal investigation.
