Deputy Resigns, 3 Officers Suspended After Jail Escape

The Wayne County Sheriff has announced a resignation and suspensions following last months jail escape. Inmate Shawn Meacham escaped on July 2 by literally walking out the front door after posing as a weekend inmate scheduled for release. Sheriff Barry Virts said the escape was possible because  policies, procedures and protocols were not followed. Virts says the shift sergeant resigned during the investigation to avoid disciplinary action for his neglect of duty. The housing officer and booking room officer were both handed 40 day suspensions without pay.  The main control officer was given a ten day suspension without pay. Meachum was captured within 24 hours and was in jail for a probation violation on a 3rd degree burglary charge. He now faces a first degree escape charge.
