Race Car Fire Severely Burns Oswego Man

An Oswego man suffered severe burns when his race car burst into flames yesterday in a parking lot at the Paradise Speedway in Geneva.

Deputies said Michael Humphrey had taken a practice lap and pulled off the track with his micro sprint car when it suddenly went up in flames with Humphrey still inside.

Fans and other drivers rushed to pull Humphrey out of the burning car, but he suffered third degree burns over most of his body. He was taken by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and is listed in guarded condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office is investigating how the fire started. The cause isn't certain.
