Senator Chuck Schumer will be in Penn Yan later today to discuss organics fraud.
He says food products, especially foreign ones, mislabeled as “organic” threaten to undermine the growing organics industry in Yates County and across the state. And he wants more aggressive enforcement from the Department of Agriculture and the Inspector General.
Schumer says The Birkett Mills in Penn Yan and other Yates County organic growers and processors will be hurt if the USDA does not work harder to address non-organic products entering the US and being sold as USDA-certified organic.
