Crews are starting work on a the big makeover around the 390/490 interchange in Gates.
Utility work for the project is already under way on Lyell Avenue. And work could start next week to tear down and replace the Lyell Avenue bridge.
It's the first phase of a $150 million project to make the roads and highways safer and more efficient.
Plans call for new lanes, a new Lyell Avenue bridge over 390, new 390 overpasses over Trolley Boulevard, and a wider Lyell Avenue.
