(AP) Pembrooke N.Y- A Buffalo-area teenager is hospitalized after falling into a Genesee County gorge while hiking with friends.

Emergency officials say that 17-year-old Matthew Kwiatkowski (kweyt-KOW'-skee) of West Seneca was hiking Thursday night with three other teens from the Buffalo area when he fell into the gorge at Indian Falls in the town of Pembroke.

Authorities say Kwiatkowski fell about 15 to 20 feet from the top of the falls to some rocks along the banks of Tonawanda Creek. He managed to climb onto a rock ledge, but it took rescue crews about two hours to hoist the injured teen from the gorge.

He was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
