Rochester firefighters rescued a man from the Genesee River in downtown Rochester just before 8:00 Sunday morning after he apparently fell off the Main Street Bridge and was swept downstream.
The man was spotted in the river behind the Radisson Hotel at about 7:45 a.m. Callers alerted 911, and police were able to spot the man on surveillance cameras holding on to the west side of the Sister Cities pedestrian bridge in Genesee Crossroads Park.
Firefighters mounted a water rescue and had the man out within minutes. They say the the man was conscious when they got to him, but had only his head above water. The Swift Water Rescue team lowered a ladder from the bridge and a firefighter went into the water and was able to get the man to the ladder and bring him up.
The man was taken to the hospital.
