Dramatic Video Shows Innocent UPS Truck Caught In High-Speed Police Chase

A UPS truck was caught up in a high-speed police chase of a stolen pickup truck in New Mexico earlier this month.

New Mexico State Police officers successfully stopped the suspect vehicle by deploying spike belts across I-40 West near Tucumari, KRQE reports.

However, the bystander UPS truck also ran over the spike belt, according to police.

"I got the UPS truck but I got hime we're good," a New Mexico State Police officer said via KRQE.

Spike belts are commonly used by law enforcement nationwide during vehicle pursuit situations and, in some cases, lead to the officers slowing themselves down in the process.

“We spike belt our own people sometimes our officers have spike belted themselves,” said Lt. Mark Soriano via KRQE.

Soriano said officers are trained on the spike belts while training in the police academy, but with heavy traffic on interstates, it's possible for innocent drivers to become caught in a police chase and run over the spike belts.

“Our officers make every effort to avoid deploying the devices in a manner that could damage the tires of any uninvolved vehicle,” Soriano said via KRQE.

The New Mexico State Police Department said it pays for any damages to unintended vehicles that occurs when spike belts are deployed.
