LONSBERRY: What Are Republicans For?

What are Republicans for?

Was that what Joe Biden asked?

               What are Republicans for?

Republicans are for freedom. For God, family and country. For the principles of our founding documents and founding fathers.

For freer people and smaller government. For self-reliance and strong defense. For the balance of powers and the rule of law. For an open door but a secured border, and a policy that always puts America first.

Republicans stand for what Republicans have always stood for.

The Republican Party was created to throw off the slavery of human bondage, and it stands today fighting against the slavery of welfare dependence. The Republican Party believes that more often than not the government is not the solution, government is the problem.

Republicans are for a government which – like the Declaration and Constitution declare – exists to safeguard God-given liberty. Republicans believe that each American is best situated to determine what his or her “pursuit of happiness” is, and ought not to face unnecessary government regulation, restriction and taxation while engaged in that pursuit.

Republicans believe that government should get off your back and out of your pocket.

Republicans believe that you should choose whether or not you get vaccinated and whether or not your kids wear a mask in school.

Republicans believe that parents who question what their kids are being taught in school are patriots, not terrorists. Republicans are for rigorous education that demands each student reach his or her highest potential, but are absolutely opposed to the schools being used to propagandize children. Republicans believe that using schools to advance anybody’s political or social agenda is wrong, and must always be opposed. Republicans believe that no child should be taught in school that his color is wrong, or that his gender is uncertain.

What parents teach their children at home is their business, but what children are taught at school – by the government – is everyone’s business, and must be kept free of the taint of politics and culture war.

Republicans are for freedom of religion. True freedom of religion. For everyone – including conservative Christians. Not just in private worship, but in public life. Not to impose one’s faith upon another, but to avoid the suppression of anyone’s faith by government or society. “The free exercise thereof” must be re-embraced by the American government.

Republicans are for capitalism, which is nothing more than freedom applied in the economic realm, with the belief that you have a right to what you earn. The government has the power to tax, to fund its essential functions, but it must not use taxation to reshape society or redistribute wealth. Taking from those who earn to give to those who don’t is theft, whether done by street criminal or government dictate. Republicans believe in providing for those who can’t provide for themselves, but not in supporting those who won’t provide for themselves.

Republicans believe that government shouldn’t punish those who succeed and reward those who fail. Republicans believe that if you earn it, you ought to be able to keep it.

Republicans are for policies that put America and Americans first. Trade priorities that protect American jobs, markets and prosperity are always right. If so-called “free trade” exports American wealth and destroys American jobs, then it’s no good. America First means that people across our economy have a fighting chance to make themselves a living and support their families, without being undercut by bad trade policies and ruthless companies.

When giant corporations unfairly oppressed American workers and markets more than a hundred years ago, it was a Republican president who leveled the playing field.

And when American defenses had fallen into dangerous neglect through the 1970s, it was a Republican president who built them back and brought down the Soviet Union.

Republicans stand for live and let live, for the belief that all are equal before the law, and that there should be no special privilege or favor for any person or any group. Republicans stand for equality – not replacing one form of bias with another.

Republicans believe that the police are our protectors, not our oppressors, that law enforcement is an instrument of civilization, not a weapon of white supremacy. Republicans believe that “domestic tranquility” includes the passage and enforcement of laws which protect people from criminal activity, and that those who are convicted of breaking those laws should be punished. Republicans believe that Americans should be able to walk down their streets in safety, and be secure in their homes and properties, and that it is the job of government to vigorously assure that those conditions exist.

Republicans do not believe in defunding the police.

Republicans believe that all life matters.

Republicans believe that all eligible voters should have ready access to the polls, but that ballots should not be sent out in mass mailings or be given to people whose identity is unproven. Democracy includes assuring the integrity of the vote and protecting it from schemes to defraud.

And Republicans believe that socialism is wrong

Which leads them to conclude that progressivism is wrong.

Joe Biden asked what Republicans are for. We’re for America.

Which is one of the things that makes us different from Democrats.
