Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes is taking his time to decide on a new contract as he enters the final year of his six-year deal originally signed with the Vancouver Canucks. At the NHL Media Tour this week, the 26-year-old emphasized that there's no rush to finalize an extension. "This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done," Hughes said, highlighting his thoughtful approach to the decision.
Hughes, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027, has been eligible for an extension since July 1 of this year. However, he remains focused on the upcoming season rather than the contract negotiations. According to MPR News, Hughes stated, "I don’t feel backed up against the wall. I’m very thoughtful. I want to take my time on everything and make sure I’m making a decision that is going to be good for everyone."
Despite the uncertainty, Hughes expressed his satisfaction with the Wild, praising the team, coach John Hynes, and his defense partner Brock Faber. "Of course it's a spot I could see myself staying," Hughes mentioned, as reported by NHL.com. The Wild's general manager, Bill Guerin, remains confident about re-signing Hughes, even as contract talks are expected to intensify.
The potential for Hughes to become one of the highest-paid players in the NHL looms, especially after defenseman Cale Makar's record-setting deal. However, Hughes' decision may also be influenced by the desire to eventually play alongside his brothers, Jack and Luke, in New Jersey. Yahoo Sports notes that Hughes has been contemplating his future, weighing the options between staying with the Wild or reuniting with his siblings.
