Rochester police are probing what they're calling a justifiable homicide on the city's west side.
They say a suspect tried to break into the back door of a home on Avery Street, near Emerson Street, early this morning.
That's when the home's owner opened fire with his legally owned handgun, killing the man.
The suspect was dead at the scene.
Police say the homeowner is cooperating with them.
That area has had several burglaries in recent days.
