Snowmobilers Could Face Charges After Rescue in Gates

The Monroe County sheriff's office says charges are possible for the seven snowmobilers who had to be rescued from the Erie Canal in Gates. Sergeant Matthew Mackenzie says one rider went through the ice near Brooks Avenue on Sunday, and the others were stranded. Snowmobiling is not permitted on the canal. "They were traveling west along the canal and they entered from Brockport. The ice was getting progressively thinner so they were looking for a place to get off but there is none. The embankment on the side is just too steep,” said Mackenzie. Firefighters had to rappel down the embankment and use a rope to rescue the riders. The rescue took two hours. One rider needed treatment for hypothermia and another has a broken arm.
